NIKE BLANKET PETITION

From 2003-2008, a diverse group of international knit and crochet hobbyists participated in a microRevolt project called the Nike Blanket Petition, a 15-foot wide handmade blanket of the Nike swoosh. Each 4 x 4 inch stitched square creates the Nike logo, acting as a signature for fair labor policies for Nike garment workers. Over the five-year period, virtual and hand-made squares were collected on tour, electronically and by postmail, representing over 30 countries demonstrated above.

The accumulated multi-colored squares were knitted into the border of the Nike Blanket at Garanti Gallery in Istanbul Turkey in November 2007 next to a Nike store, and the blanket was completed in 2008. In 2009 the artwork toured with the show Judy Chicago in Thread as part of the exhibition She Will Always Be Younger Than Us at the Textile Museum of Canada (February 11 - September 7, 2009) and the Toronto and the Art Gallery of Calgary (September 25, 2009 – Saturday, January 23, 2010). A video about the project as well as the folded object is on view in the study center at the Museum of Contemporary Craft in Portland, Oregon (January 26 - June 26). It is exhibiting in full view in the education center from Tuesday May 18 - Saturday May 22, 2010 at the same location.
